RURAL
BUS SHELTER SAFETY IMPROVED
BUS USERS IN CORSE now benefit from a solar lit shelter, the first
of it kind in Gloucestershire. Due to the difficulty of recurring electricity
supplies in some rural areas, Gloucester County Council have installed
the first solar lighting panels for bus shelters in Corse and Lyndney
Railway Station. These will enable bus users to access bus information
at all times of the day and night by either approaching or pushing a button
to activate the light, and enhance perceptions of personal safety.
Mike Taplin Transport Services Manager said " As part of our programme
to make the whole public transport experience more attractive, we were
keen to see what could be done to improve dark hours conditions at bus
stops in rural areas. Sometimes there is no nearby electricity supply,
so we are trying these solar panels as a cost-effective way of providing
local lighting. We hope bus users will give us feedback on this initiative".
The
supplier of the solar lighting systems was Creative Action Ltd. David
Godfrey Managing Director said " The Omnilight Solar Lighting system
has been designed specifically for bus stops and bus shelters. They have
been designed to provide an immediate solution to poor or no light situations,
fixing onto existing bus stops and shelters. With no digging or mess,
the lights supplied were installed in only 3 hours. Rural public transport
users now have the opportunity to wait for their transport in a more comfortable
environment "
