Added Security for Waiting Passengers LONG BEACH, CALIF

.- As part of an ongoing effort to improve transit system safety, Long Beach Transit has begun the installation of solar-powered lights at many of its busiest bus stops. Twenty solar lights have been installed, and 20 more should be in operation by the end of the summer.

Customers can easily activate the light with the push of a button. The solar-powered light stays on for 20 minutes, providing security for the waiting bus rider. The locations for the lights were selected based on information provided by Long Beach Transit operations supervisors, the transit police, and customer service representatives who field suggestions from customers. The chosen stops are high-volume night stops

. "The light shining at a bus stop serves as a signal to the coach operator that someone is waiting at the stop," said Dave McCauley, Long Beach Transit manager of facilities.
